Woman strips as she flees police

by Lisa Halverstadt

Youngtown police officers were a bit puzzled when an El Mirage woman accused of rear-ending another vehicle ran from them when they arrived, stripping her clothes off as she fled.

It all started with when 44-year-old Anne Pollard hit a man's vehicle on Friday the 13th and he tried to pull over to the side of the road, Youngtown police Lt. Duren Robertson said.

When he got out of the car to call police, Pollard apparently started hitting the man and screaming at him.

She also tried to cover his mouth as he attempted to talk to a 911 dispatcher, Robertson said.

When Youngtown police and Maricopa County sheriff's deputies responded, Pollard started running and stripping, the lieutenant said.

Officers eventually handcuffed her nearby. A breath test revealed that she had likely been driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of 0.167.

Paperwork in her car showed that she had just pleaded guilty to DUI in Surprise, Robertson said.

Pollard was booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of extreme DUI, assault, threatening and intimidating and disorderly conduct by fighting.

Mother has 14-year-old son help cultivate marijuana and sell drugs at school

Waynesville mom with ties to WPAFB charged with selling drugs

WAYNESVILLE — Some mothers give their sons household chores like taking out the garbage or helping with the laundry. Stephanie Bowser is facing charges of having her 14-year-old son help cultivate marijuana.

Bowser was arrested at her Waynesville home Friday afternoon, after months of investigation that began at her former residence on Webbshaw Drive in Washington Twp. The investigation was launched after intelligence from more than one source, said Commander John Burke, with the Warren County Drug Task Force.

According to police, Bowser also gave a 16-year-old friend and her 17-year-old boyfriend prescription drugs to sell at school.

"It's an unusual case and a sad situation, really," Burke said.

Bowser, 38, is accused of distributing Darvocet, Xanax, Ultram and Wellbutrin. She also is charged with allowing Xanax to be sold at her home, and with possessing methadone.

She was indicted on 22 counts by the Montgomery County Grand Jury, including trafficking in drugs, endangering children and corrupting another with drugs.

Her son is with family members and has not been charged.

Bowser, an employee with Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, has security clearance at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Sex ed teacher tries humor; student posts video on YouTube

Sex ed teacher tries humor; student posts video on YouTube

The Grant High School teacher is wearing a condom on his head and a pair of red underwear over his pants with a strategically placed hole in the middle. He's trying to explain the dangers of unsafe sex, but the students' laughter and gasps of disbelief drown him out.

A student shot the four-minute video of Norman Scott's sex education class with a cell phone camera late last year. It's received a prolonged life on YouTube and a stern rebuke from school district officials: Don't ever teach that way again.

Lesson transcript

Teacher Norman Scott provided a transcript of his presentation to students. He was playing a character he called "Elmer Beaumont."

Safe Sex Kit
By Elmer Beaumont

Hello my name is Elmer Beaumont and I am an EX high (school) student and an expert on sex. Mr. Scott has asked me to speak on the topic of safer sex and share some of my vast knowledge with you. I have been with 25 ladies and have only gotten two girls pregnant and contracted 6 STD's. I've had to revise my thinking and take some additional precautions to keep my sexual activity if not safe at least safer. How many of you think a condom provides safe sex? I used to think so until I got burned a few times. I've come up with a few practical guidelines for those who want to get it on and keep yourself if not safe safer.

1. Always wear rubber gloves! I know it's a little unromantic, but any hand contact with the genitals can spread an STI. It's probably good to bring an extra pair for your partner.

2. Get out your flashlight! Many times people will lie to you about what they have done sexually or what they have, so you have to check it out for yourself. It's important to check out the mouth for any open sores, herpes infections or HPV warts on the tongue. Also you get to play doctor and shine the light down below. Make sure you check for any signs of herpes sores, HPV warts, along with crabs or any other things that might be living in the pubic hair.

3. Use a CPR mask in making any contact with the mouth. I know it's not quite as fun as kissing, but at least you can blow hot air on your date. Remember gums can bleed and you may have missed a sore in the back of the mouth. Better to be safe than sorry!

4. Put on your condom pants. Some STD's are spread even when a condom is used perfectly like herpes, HPV, crabs and pubic lice. Condom pants will cover you in areas that a condom won't. You should be (in) good shape unless your condom breaks or slips off after orgasm and that only happens once in a while.

5. Now it is time to put on your condom. Remember a condom alone can be dangerous so be sure to follow the above steps so you can have safer sex. A condom easily rolls out and will fit any size male. As a matter of fact it is large enough to fit on a person's head. (If you are brave put the condom on your head over your nose with your mouth exposed and proceed to blow up the condom till it pops).

Conclusion: Remember the best sex is in a lifelong committed faithful marriage relationship or a life long monogamous relationship. If you are in this relationship, you can have maximum sex without the hassle of the above safety precautions. If (you're) not and want to enjoy sex please follow the above guidelines closely for safer sex.

"What you saw in that video in no way, shape or form represents Portland Public Schools' approved curriculum," district spokesman Matt Shelby said. "Sex education can be a tough subject, and I've certainly known health teachers who try to make it a bit more engaging and break the ice, but that was well beyond anything I've ever seen."

Scott, who has taught health and physical education in high school and middle school for 33years, said the video clip doesn't capture the intent of his class, which is to educate 10th-graders about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases and the importance of safe sex.

The 45-minute class starts out with him dressed in a wig and hat, pretending to be a former high school student who has gotten two girls pregnant and contracted six sexually transmitted diseases. The character gives teens a guide to safe sex and says the best sex is in a lifelong committed marriage or monogamous relationship.

The condom-and-underwear routine was his first, Scott said.

District officials declined to say whether they disciplined him, but he remains in his current job as a health teacher at Grant.

Scott defends the lesson and said he may try to teach it again next year.

"It was very effective," he said. "Sometime you get the point across better when you come back at it from a different angle."

Grant High Principal Joseph Malone said he hasn't received any complaints about the video, just parents asking if he'd seen it and students expressing surprise at Scott's teaching method.

The district has an approved curriculum for sex ed, including how to use a condom. But Malone said it's up to individual teachers how to design their lessons. Asked what he thought of the video, he laughed.

"It's hard to say," Malone said. "There are some things I never would have addressed in that manner."

Esther Kim, the 17-year-old junior who shot the video, said she thought Scott's presentation was amusing and wanted to share it with her friends. She said it has received 600 views, which surprises her because she never thought it would reach so many people. She called Scott "courageous" for putting a condom over his head.

"Instead of a boring film or lecture, I think it was pretty interesting," Kim said. "It was kind of awkward, but funny."

Hydrogen bacteria to fill gas tanks?

A Russian-born scientist living in the U.S. state of Tennessee believes he may have found a solution to rising petrol costs – a cheap way to produce hydrogen.

Biology Professor Sergey Markov from Austin Peay State University has discovered a way to produce hydrogen fuel for vehicles by using photosynthetic bacteria.

“This is very attractive for industrial application because photosynthetic bacteria can produce hydrogen using solar light and water and we have plenty of solar light and water around,” he said.

The specific purple bacteria Dr. Markov is referring to, grows in mud, ponds and lakes. The prototype bioreactor he built mixes the bacteria with carbon monoxide and water - and makes hydrogen.

Hydrogen is an attractive alternative fuel for the future. It’s is reusable, efficient and eco-friendly since when it burns it produces ordinary water and no greenhouse gases. However it’s explosive and requires special engines – problems yet to be solved.

Dr. Markov is now building a pilot scale bio-reactor – the prototype he has now is just too small for mass hydrogen production.

He's received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy - but says more finance and support is needed.

NASA develops ‘lunar GPS’

The U.S. space agency is funding research into a system to help astronauts navigate the Moon’s surface. The device will allow lunar explorers find their way in a terrain lacking distinctive landmarks.

The Lunar Astronaut Spatial Orientation and Information System (LASOIS) will use satellite images and footage from stereo cameras on moon rovers. These will then create a 3D map of the region on landing.

A server at the Moon lander will then process data from sensors on the astronauts’ suits and track their position. It will be synchronised with an Earth-based data centre.

The suits will have an arm-mounted LCD touch screen similar to a common GPS navigator. This will display all the necessary info: a map, locations of other people and rovers, suggested paths and so on.

A network of pre-deployed radio beacons will ensure communication and give extra navigational data.

The project is estimated to cost $US 1.2 million.

The LASOIS will be field tested in a lunar-like environment, most likely the Mojave Desert.

Playing gigs in Russia to be taxed

Playing gigs for Russia's ultra rich is going to be more difficult for top rock stars and celebrities. The migration service is considering making all entertainers coming to the country get working visas and pay taxes.

Lawyers predict it might turn into a nightmare.

“Definitely it will be a big obstacle. Why? Because the Russian legislation says that on the annual basis the companies, which invite foreign nationals to work in Russia, need to submit applications with quote expectations. And they should know a year beforehand who they're inviting,”
says Timur Beslangurov from the Association of European businesses.

Bob van Ronkel is better known in Moscow as Hollywood's Man. When a foreign celebrity needs a helping hand in Russia they turn to Bob. The Beverly Hills native is afraid that a new measure, if introduced, could frighten away many his clients.

So far singers and actors coming to Russia have gone through simplified procedures – they either applied for a short-term tourist visa or received the so-called culture visa accredited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Things might look slightly different now, with celebrities going through blood tests, including HIV, and going through labour tests.

“Stars coming to Russia are unique. You don't have to prove that you’re Madonna. That's nonsense!” Beslangurov believes.

And still there are artists who take it easy and say visa procedures are complex elsewhere in the world.

"American procedures are also very complex. That's the world we live in,” Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice says, before adding: “It's part of our business to play music to people. If these people work for Gazprom or for Dell computers it really makes no difference. They are still people and they wanna hear the music.”

Obviously the step by the Federal Migration Service is not aimed against entertainers coming to Russia to perform official concerts or promote their films, but rather against those who cash in on Moscow's nightclubs and the private homes of Russia's rich.

Yet it's hard to imagine Madonna or Elton John on a waiting list of the Russian labour market. Their potential employers could face an even bigger challenge: to try to prove to the authorities that none of Russia's unemployed singers could be a worthy substitute to either Madge or Elton.

No jail for young man in underage sex case

A Moscow court has ruled that an 18-year-old man will not be jailed for having a sexual relationship with his girlfriend of just 14, who is now pregnant. The court decided that psychiatric issues were involved.

Underage sex is a crime under Russian law and the boy risked not only jail, but missing the birth of his first child.

The young man will be undergoing psychiatric tests for a month in a special clinic.

He was not given a suspended sentence and will be free to go once the tests have been conducted.

For the expectant parents it should be a happy time. Except this is no ordinary family. The mother to be, Dasha, is 14 years old, while the father is four years older at 18.

Misha has broken the law. He has been charged with having sex with a minor. If convicted, he could have been jailed for up to four years.

Misha's main defence is that he believed Dasha was 16.

The couple are now mostly concerned with making a home for the baby, which is due in a matter of weeks.

They’re staying at Misha’s mother’s house, where space is at a premium.

Talking to RT just days before the verdict, they remained defiant – they said they would be together no matter what.

“I think everything will be just fine. We love each other. And we’ll be together till our last days,” Misha said.

”I don’t think it may be perfect, but still I hope we’ll succeed,” Dasha echoed.

Misha’s mother, meanwhile, was petrified that her teenage son might go to jail. She had advised her boy not to have sex, but told him to practice safe sex if he did.

”I am simply exhausted as the thing has been going on since August. Whatever the court rules, I will not contest it,” Misha's mother Olga said.

“I think here there are grounds for commutation and if the authorities allow them to get married legally, it would be also possible to exempt him from punishment,” said lawyer Vyacheslav Makarov.

It was claimed Dasha’s grandmother contacted the police about Misha and Dasha's illegal sexual relationship – a claim she in turn denied.

”I didn’t,” Natalya said: “I went to the doctor right away to find out how long gone she was, or whether she was that way at all. I didn’t go to the police.”

An organisation dedicated to advising young mums got involved. It said Dasha's feelings and views were not being considered.

The case has highlighted the large number of under-age mothers in Russia and the lack of support for them – an issue that welfare groups say needs raising.

The law is there to protect underage girls like Dasha. But some commentators are saying that in this case common sense prevailed, and the father was let off prosecution so he can support his girlfriend and their baby.

*RT has changed the names and blurred the girl’s image on the video to protect her identity as the age of consent is 16 in Russia.
